This is the welcome text for the eleventh edition (2019) of the Pantalla Latina Film Festival, in which I participated for the first time as a designer and WordPress expert.

Pantalla Latina returns to St. Gallen with the best Latin American cinema of the year: feature and short films, premieres and previews in our city of films that have been successful around the world.

...continue (from the welcome text):

In this 11th edition, we will screen 16 feature films and 13 short films from 12 Latin American countries at our headquarters in the heart of San Galo, Cinema Scala. In addition, we will have an exceptional parallel program with live music, photo exhibits and much more.

The Festival team needed a self-managed website, to have the programming available on cell phones and computers. A portal would also allow them to add trailers and clips of the material they screen every year.

Their idea was to have a page similar to those of other festivals, with a resemblance to streaming services with scrollable carousels. Hence, the rectangular design of the grid, day by day and film by film.

The implementation would be made with responsive design, adaptable to the widest variety of screen sizes.

The Problem

How to edit the Festival's programming without having to code HTML, pay a license fee or order custom software.

The contents of the website are divided into three parts: the news, the institutional area and the programming. They must be editable in both Swiss-German and Spanish.

The most complex part is the scheduling of the events, with date, time, ticket purchases, trailers, image galleries and film credits.

The Solution

A WordPress website solved the problem of licensing or costly custom development.

The biggest technical difficulty was in event planning, as well as content translation and navigation in two languages.

While the latter was fairly straightforward to implement, both the design and business logic of the events required considerable work with special templates and complex style sheets.

But, finally, their editing on the Dashboard (date, time, place, etc.) could be done without the client having to code, which had been specifically requested.
